Introduction

The engineering problem at hand is a need for a bridge to span across a body of water in order to allow vehicles to cross otherwise impassable terrain. There is also a need for the bridge to articulate to allow a boat to pass underneath. The bridge and articulation structure must be constructed solely of balsa wood and glue. Only non-structural articulation components can be made of other materials. The bridge must be able to support a load of 20kg without failure while weighing less than 85 grams itself. Designing this bridge requires the use of multiple engineering concepts including statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials in order to ensure it meets all requirements once constructed.
